Prayer for grandmothers

Anchors: Jeremiah 3:14

Lord, You said in Jeremiah 3:14, I am married to You. That sentence has carried me through nine years of widowhood. It is not just a nice idea. It is a covenant. Walter and I sang about it in our wedding hymn. He went to be with You in March the year I turned sixty-eight. The bed has been half-empty since. The morning coffee has been one cup since. Lord, You said it: I am married to You. I do not get to feel single in this widowhood. The covenant continues. Someone is still committed. Someone still asks after me. Father, on the harder mornings, let me lean on the marriage that did not end. The one Walter and I had was good and is gone for now. The one with You is older than that one and still here. Walk me through today the way You walked me through that first weekend after the funeral, when I did not know I was being carried. Carry me again, more slowly this time, because the road is shorter and I am paying more attention now. Amen.
