Prayer for grandmothers

Anchors: Psalm 96:1, Lamentations 3:23

Father, Your Word says to sing a new song to You. Psalm 96:1. I am not a songwriter. I never was. But the new song an old woman can sing is a quiet one. It is the praise I offer in this kitchen this morning, standing over the kettle. It is the thank-You under my breath when the right word comes to mind in a hard conversation. It is one line of an old hymn I find myself humming while I do the dishes. None of those are new because they were just written. They are new because I am singing them today, in a moment that has never existed before. Your mercies are new every morning. Lamentations 3:22-23. And the songs about them can be new too, even when the words have been around for a long time. Let me sing today. In my heart, mostly. Out loud, a little, when no one else is near. To You, all of it. Let the song be small. Let it be glad. Let it be Yours. Amen.
